Driveways and Drainage
Driveway Construction & Drainage Solutions — Nanaimo & Mid Vancouver Island
At Dandy Excavations Inc., we build and maintain gravel driveways and drainage systems that handle Vancouver Island’s wet climate and stand up to daily use. Whether you need a new driveway built from scratch, a deteriorating one regraded and repaired, or a persistent drainage problem solved, we do the work properly — with the right base, correct pitch, and clean water management from the start.
Owner-operator Brian Hay has been building and regrading driveways and drainage systems across Mid Vancouver Island for years, and has seen what holds up — and what doesn’t. Every job reflects that experience.
What We Do
New Driveway Construction
A new gravel driveway is only as good as what’s underneath it. We start with proper excavation to remove organics and soft material, establish a compacted base, apply appropriate crushed gravel in layers, and shape the finished surface with the right cross-slope so water drains to the sides rather than pooling or running down the centre. Done right, a gravel driveway is durable, low-maintenance, and performs well year-round.
Driveway Regrading & Repair
Over time, driveways develop ruts, lose their crown, collect standing water, or develop washouts. We regrade and restore existing driveways — sometimes adding material, sometimes reshaping what’s there — to restore proper drainage and a smooth, stable driving surface. A regraded driveway often performs as well as a new one at a fraction of the cost.
Drainage Ditches & Swales
Roadside ditches and property swales do important work: they collect and direct runoff away from driveways, foundations, and landscaped areas. We clean, reshape, and establish drainage ditches and swales to ensure water has a clear, controlled path off your property. This is especially important on Vancouver Island, where sustained rainfall can overwhelm poorly designed drainage quickly.
Culvert Installation & Maintenance
Culverts allow water to pass under a driveway or road without washing it out. Proper culvert work requires correct sizing for the expected flow, proper bedding, appropriate inlet and outlet treatment, and correct driveway material placed over top. We install new culverts and rehabilitate existing ones that are collapsed, undersized, or improperly installed.
French Drains & Sub-Surface Drainage
When surface grading alone can’t solve a wet yard, low spot, or boggy area, sub-surface drainage is often the answer. We install French drains — perforated pipe in a gravel-filled trench — to intercept and redirect groundwater before it saturates the surface. This is a particularly effective solution for wet areas near foundations, garages, and driveways.
Erosion Control & Slope Drainage
Slopes and embankments adjacent to driveways can erode quickly without proper water management. We shape and stabilize these areas, directing runoff before it cuts channels and undermines the driveway edge. Proper slope drainage protects your driveway investment and keeps the surrounding land stable.
Vancouver Island Drainage — Why It Matters Here
The Pacific Northwest climate is unforgiving on driveways and drainage systems that aren’t built right. Nanaimo and surrounding areas receive most of their rainfall between October and March, and that sustained moisture is hard on any surface without proper grading and drainage. Freeze-thaw cycles, clay-heavy soils that expand when wet, and sloped terrain all add complexity. Brian has worked in these conditions for years and builds driveways and drainage systems that account for local climate and soil behaviour — not just ideal conditions.
Why Choose Dandy Excavations
A lot of driveway work looks fine when it’s first done — and falls apart within a year or two because the base wasn’t right or the drainage wasn’t thought through. Brian builds driveways with the long view: proper excavation, layered base, correct crown and cross-slope, and clean drainage that keeps water moving away from the surface. He’s seen what fails and why, and builds to avoid those problems from the start. Done once, done right.
