Land Clearing and Site Prep

Land Clearing & Site Preparation — Nanaimo & Mid Vancouver Island

At Dandy Excavations Inc., we provide thorough, efficient land clearing and site preparation for homeowners, owner-builders, and small contractors throughout Nanaimo, Cedar, Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Ladysmith, Duncan, and surrounding Mid Vancouver Island communities. Whether you’re starting a build, reclaiming overgrown property, or preparing land for landscaping, we clear and shape the ground from the roots up — leaving a clean, stable site ready for whatever comes next.

Owner-operator Brian Hay brings 35+ years of experience across BC and Western Canada. He’s cleared everything from small residential lots to large rural properties and knows how to work efficiently, protect adjacent areas, and leave a site properly prepared — not just cleared.

What We Do

Brush & Vegetation Clearing

Heavy brush, scrub, and dense undergrowth can make a property completely unusable and even pose a fire risk. We mechanically clear brush and vegetation efficiently, including stumping and root removal where needed. The difference between cutting brush and properly removing it is significant — we remove the material that would otherwise regrow or interfere with grading and construction.

Blackberry & Invasive Plant Removal

Himalayan blackberries are one of the most persistent and fast-spreading invasive plants on Vancouver Island. We don’t cut them — we pull them out by the roots, extracting the crowns and root systems that cause regrowth. This is the only approach that actually resolves the problem rather than temporarily holding it back.

Stump & Root Removal

Stumps left in the ground rot over time, create voids, and interfere with construction, drainage, and grading. We excavate and remove stumps and major root systems so your site is truly clear — solid, even ground with nothing buried that will cause problems later.

Site Grading & Levelling

Clearing is just the beginning. Once vegetation and debris are removed, the ground needs to be shaped for its intended purpose. We grade and level sites for construction pads, driveways, landscaping, or general use — managing slopes, establishing proper drainage direction, and compacting the surface so it stays stable.

Debris Removal & Disposal

Cleared brush, stumps, roots, rocks, and organic material have to go somewhere. We pile, haul, or manage debris on-site in accordance with local guidelines, leaving your property clean and accessible. A cleared site that’s left covered in debris isn’t useful — we leave you with open, workable ground.

Access & Temporary Road Establishment

Before clearing or construction can begin, a site sometimes needs access. We establish temporary access routes — clearing, grading, and compacting paths for equipment, deliveries, and tradespeople. Properly established access protects the rest of the site and keeps the job moving efficiently.

Erosion Control & Drainage Management

Freshly cleared land is vulnerable to erosion, especially during Vancouver Island’s wet season. We grade cleared sites to direct water away from sensitive areas, prevent washouts, and stabilize exposed ground. Planning for drainage at the clearing stage prevents expensive problems down the line.

Getting Ready to Build? What to Know

If you’re preparing a site for construction on Vancouver Island, clearing and site prep is one of the most important investments you’ll make. A properly cleared and prepped site means smoother inspections, fewer delays, better drainage, and a foundation that performs as designed. Brian has worked alongside contractors and owner-builders throughout the region and understands what a site needs to be truly build-ready — not just visually clear.

Why Choose Dandy Excavations

Site clearing done right is methodical work. It requires reading the terrain, understanding what’s underneath, protecting what should stay, and removing what shouldn’t. Brian approaches every clearing job the way a seasoned operator does — efficiently, safely, and with an eye on what the site needs to look like when the clearing is done, not just during it. The result is a clean, stable, properly graded site that’s ready for the next phase of your project.
