Landscaping & Grounds Work — Nanaimo & Mid Vancouver Island

At Dandy Excavations Inc., we bring shape, structure, and lasting function to outdoor spaces across Nanaimo, Cedar, Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Ladysmith, Duncan, and surrounding Mid Vancouver Island communities. Good landscaping starts underground — with the right grade, proper drainage, and solid groundwork. Everything built on top of that foundation performs better and lasts longer.

Owner-operator Brian Hay combines 35+ years of excavation experience with a genuine eye for how land should look and function. He’s not just moving dirt — he’s shaping your property with care and precision, so the result is something you’ll appreciate for years.

What We Do

Land Grading & Shaping

The foundation of any good landscape is how the ground is shaped. We grade yards, gardens, and open areas to create balanced contours that shed water properly, prevent pooling near structures, and give you a smooth base for lawns, gardens, or hardscaping. Getting the grade right the first time saves a lot of expensive problems later.

Retaining Walls & Rock Features

Slopes need to be managed. We build retaining walls using natural rock, boulders, and other materials that hold slopes securely while blending naturally into the landscape. Rock features — from accent boulders to naturalized rocky areas — add character and reduce maintenance on steep or challenging terrain. Every wall is built with proper drainage behind it so it performs as well structurally as it looks visually.

Yard Restoration & Reclamation

Neglected yards, overgrown lots, and properties reclaimed from invasive blackberries need more than just clearing — they need reshaping. We grade and restore reclaimed areas so the ground is level, well-drained, and ready for seeding, planting, or new landscaping. If the terrain is rough and uneven, we can transform it into clean, usable property.

Drainage Solutions

Standing water, boggy patches, and flooding near your home are grading and drainage problems. We address the root cause — not just the symptom — by reshaping the land, installing swales, and ensuring water has a clear path away from your home and landscaped areas. Vancouver Island’s wet winters make proper drainage critical for any outdoor space.

Pathways & Garden Prep

Whether you want a gravel pathway through a garden, a stone-bordered planting bed, or a level pad for a shed or outdoor structure, we handle the groundwork. Proper sub-base preparation, edging, and grading ensures that finished surfaces stay level, drain cleanly, and don’t sink or shift over time.

Topsoil Placement & Finish Grading

After clearing, grading, or construction, we bring in and place topsoil where needed, finish grade to smooth and even, and leave the site ready for seeding, sodding, or planting. A good topsoil spread and a clean finish grade makes a significant difference in how a lawn or garden establishes.

Landscaping on Vancouver Island — Local Knowledge Matters

Vancouver Island has its own character when it comes to landscape work: high seasonal rainfall, slopes that can become unstable when wet, soil that varies dramatically from property to property, and a growing season that rewards good drainage. Brian has worked throughout BC and knows the Island’s particular conditions well. That local experience means better decisions about grading angles, drainage direction, material selection, and how a finished landscape will perform through rain and dry spells alike.

Why Choose Dandy Excavations

Most landscapers focus on plants and appearance. Brian focuses on the ground itself — because that’s what determines whether everything planted and built on top of it will thrive or struggle. You get an operator with deep excavation expertise who understands drainage, soil behaviour, and structural stability, combined with a craftsman’s attention to how the finished job looks. The result is a landscape that’s not just attractive — it’s built to last.
