Retaining Walls
Retaining Walls & Precision Grading — Nanaimo & Mid Vancouver Island
At Dandy Excavations Inc., we build retaining walls and provide precision grading services that strengthen, shape, and stabilize your land — while looking like they belong there. Whether you’re managing a steep slope, creating a level usable area, preventing erosion, or adding structure to a landscaped property, every wall and grade is built with the structural integrity and craftsmanship to last.
Owner-operator Brian Hay has 35+ years of excavation and earthworks experience. He understands soil behaviour, drainage, and the forces retaining walls are built to resist — and he builds accordingly.
What We Do
Rock & Boulder Retaining Walls
Natural rock retaining walls are one of the most durable and visually fitting choices for Vancouver Island properties. When properly placed, large boulders and quarried rock create walls that blend naturally into the landscape, handle tremendous lateral soil pressure, and require minimal long-term maintenance. Brian places rock walls with the experience of someone who understands weight, balance, and drainage — not just appearance. The result is a wall that holds and looks like it grew there.
Slope Stabilization
Unstabilized slopes erode, slump, and can undermine structures, driveways, and landscaped areas over time — particularly during the wet season. We assess slope conditions, manage the grade, and install walls or reshaping treatments that stop movement and keep your land where it belongs. Getting ahead of slope problems is far less costly than dealing with a failure after the fact.
Terracing & Level Pad Creation
Sloped properties can be transformed into usable, attractive terraced spaces through retaining walls and careful grading. A terraced yard creates flat areas for gardens, outdoor living, children’s play areas, or parking — turning land that was previously steep and impractical into functional, enjoyable space. We plan and build terracing that manages drainage between levels and holds securely through wet and dry seasons alike.
Precision Grading
Grading is the art and science of shaping the ground to behave the way you want it to. We grade for drainage, for level surfaces, for lawns, for construction pads, and for landscaping — shaping the terrain so water moves where you want it, surfaces stay stable, and the finished result is clean and functional. Precision matters: a grade that’s off by just a little can mean the difference between a dry yard and a waterlogged one.
Regrading & Drainage Correction
Sometimes the grading done by a previous owner — or even a previous contractor — just isn’t right. Water pools near the foundation, the driveway drains toward the garage, or a slope has started to erode. We identify the root cause, develop a grading solution that addresses it, and regrade the affected areas so water moves properly and the ground stays stable.
Drainage Integration
Retaining walls and graded areas need water management behind and around them. Without proper drainage, hydrostatic pressure builds behind retaining walls and causes them to fail — often suddenly. We integrate drainage into every wall we build: gravel backfill, weeping tile where needed, and outlet locations that allow water to escape without undermining the structure. It’s a detail many overlook, and one that determines how long a wall actually lasts.
Retaining Walls on Vancouver Island — Built for Real Conditions
Retaining walls on Vancouver Island face specific challenges: saturated soils during long wet seasons, clay that expands when moist and contracts when dry, sloped terrain with varying rock and soil profiles, and freeze-thaw conditions at higher elevations. A wall built without accounting for these forces won’t last. Brian designs and builds retaining walls and grading solutions with local conditions in mind — because a wall that holds through the worst of a Vancouver Island winter is the only kind worth building.
Why Choose Dandy Excavations
Retaining walls look simple. Building ones that actually hold — and keep holding — is not. It requires understanding soil pressure, drainage, material weight and placement, proper base preparation, and the way water behaves in the ground behind the wall. Brian brings that understanding to every project, along with the equipment skill to place heavy rock precisely and efficiently. You get a wall that does its job quietly and well for decades — the hallmark of work done Dandy.
